In fact",says David Dinges,a sleep specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine,"there’s even a prohibition against admitting we need sleep." We have to totally change our attitude toward napping,"says Dr.William Dement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep research.2、我们不用弄清上面某些部分的原因是,它们的后面往往有一个同位语来解释说明它们的意思。 Another element in the emergence of prodigies(神童),I found,is a society that values excellence in a certain field and is able nurture talent. 这类词有很多,其中最常见的有:achieve,addition,attribute,cause,change,consequence,deny,effect,explanation,fact,form,grounds,instance,kind,manner,matter,mathod,opposite,point,problem,reason,respect,result,same,situation,thing,way. 反应:change,combat(v),come up with,develop,find,measure,respond,response等解决或结果:answer,consequence,effect,outcome,result,solution,(re)solve等。评价:(in)effect,manage,overcome,succeed,(un)successful,viable,work(v.)聚集于"主张---反主张"文章结构模式中的该类词汇有:claim,state,truth,false,in fact,in reality,believe等等。 关于态度或基调(Attitude/Tone)类题的回答应从篇章的体裁着手,一般来说,在说明文中作者的态度是客观的(objective)或中立的(neutral);而在议论文中,作者的观点才会显得多种多样,常风的选项有:(1)positive(积极的)(2)negative(消极的)(3)neutral(中立的)(4)approval(赞成的)(5)disapproval(不赞成的)(6)indifferent(漠不关心的)(7)sarcastic(讽刺的)(8)critical(批评的)(9)optimistic(乐观的)(10)pessimistic(悲观的)下而引类问题的几种提问方式:(1)What’s the writer’s attitude to…?(2)What’s the tone of the passage?(3)The author’s view is_______(4)The writer’s attitude of.this passage is apparently_________-(5)The author suggests that_________(6)According to author__________有文章中,作者观点明确,文章基调清楚,而有的文章中,作者仅仅暗示对某一问题的态度和观点,需要阅读时仔细琢磨。 Example:Iam not so na?ve,however,as to believe that sex is responsible for this unfortunate situation of the American woman.I am not a feminist, but I am an individualist.I do not believe there is any important difference between men and women.certainly not as much as there may be between one woman and another or one man and an-other.There are plenty of women and men,for that matter who would be completely fulfilled in being allowed to be as lazy as possible. If someone will ensconce them in a pleasant home and pay their bills, they ask no more of life.It is quite all right for these men and women to live thus so long as fools can be found who will pay so much for nothing much in return.Gigolos, male and female, are to be found in every class and in the best of homes. But when a man does not want to be a gigolo,he has the freedom to go out and work and create as well as he can.But a woman has not.Even if her individual husband lets her, tradition in society is against her.In this passage the author looks on the situation of women with an attitude of.A)amusement B)indifference C)disapproval C)condemnation此篇文章中,作者对待这一问题的态度十分明确、强硬(如用语I am not等等),因此只参在选项C)和D)中选择。 (1)According to the author, the word"…"means_______.(2)Which of the following is nearest in meaning to"…"?(3)The term".."in paragraph…can be best replaced by….(4)What’s the meaning of"…"in line…of paragraph….?(5)As used in the line…,the word"…"refers to_______. Example:The fishermen make their canoes from tree trunks. They go from island to island in these light marrow boats and collect turtles’eggs我们从上下文中可以得出以下信息:"canoes"是一种渔夫用树木做的、来回于岛屿之间的、轻狭长的、类似于小船之类的东西。 Example:Jogging has become very popular in some countries,It is believed to be a good exercise for old people."Jogging"的意思通过"a good exercise for old people"可以推断出是一种适合老年人的剧烈的运动方式。2. Example:If you happened to be sitting in the woods outside the city, you might have witnessed a strange sight. You would have seen a very proud looking man riding along horseback, saying something在文章中可以很容易地判断出"witnesss"的同义关系词是"seen",因此"witness"就是看见的意思。Example:In the northern regions the winters are generally cold and humid, and the summers hot and dry. Example?/p>Such experiences are not unusual for the amateur conchologists, people who collect shells. Example:Jack is now a florist, who keeps a shop for selling flowers in our district."florist"的意思就是其后定语从句"who keeps a shop for selling flowers所描述的"拥有一家专门卖花的商店的人",即"花店主"4. Example:Today young couples who are just starting their households of ten spend lots of their money on appliances, for instance, washing machines, refrigerators and color TVs. Example:Finally the enemy surrendered. They threw down their weapons and walked out of the home with their hands over their heads通过后一句对"surrendered"的解释:扔掉武器(throw down their weapons),举起双手(with their hands over heads)可知其意是"投降"5. Example:They overestimate the interviewee’s ability and asked him many difficult questions"estimate"是"估计"的意思,"over-"是前缀,意为"过分,过度,超过"等,因此"overestimate"就是"高估"的意思。Example:We were told that ours was the most spacious room in the hotel. That was why we had to pay so much for it."spacious"是由"space(名词,空间)"+"+-ious(形容词后缀"变化而来的,因此,可猜测其词义为"宽敞"。 Anthropology is the scientific study of man. Decision-thinking is not unlike poker……This card game has often been of considerable interest to people. Semantics,the study of the meaning of words,is necessary if you are to speak and read intelligently. The consequences of epochal events such as wars and great scientific discoveries are not confined to a small geographical area as they were in the past. Green loves to talk, and his brothers are similarly loquacious. 表示比较关系的词和短语主要是similarly, like, just as,also等。5. Fuel is to cars what food is to men. Doctors believe that smoking cigarettes is detrimental to your health. They also regard drinking as harmful. 7.有时也可根据一般性常识/生活经验猜测词义e.g:In the strong wind, the beggar shivered with the terrible cold. e.g:Garlic is not as mild as its cousins, the onion and the leek.It has one of the strongest flavors known to man. More recently, scientists have documented an alarmingly high occurrence of frogs with malformations.form是词根,formation“形式”,mal-:构词前缀,可表示“坏、恶、不良”,还可表示“不、不正常、不当、非法。” What is the main idea of the passage?l Which of the following would be the best title?l What’s the best title for the passage?l The main idea of the passage is that_____.l This passage tells us_____.l Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage?l What does the passage mainly discuss?l The passage is mainly about…l What’s the author’s main pointl 1.2做题方法根据不同的阅读目的,可以采用不同的阅读方法,或称阅读技巧。 Passage 1 Questions l to 5 are based on the following passage:What will man be like in the future—in 5000 or even 50000 years from now?We can only make a guess,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example.Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even so,we still make use of only about 20%of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones. This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head,in particular the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use.In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair?It will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at.This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us.He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own. 1.The passage tells us about________.[A]how man’s life will be in the future[B]how future man will look like[C]the fact that man’s organs will function differently in the future[D]the fact that man is growing uglier as time passes【解析】:B一看题目,The passage tells us about________. What will man be like in the future—in 5000 or even 50000 years from now?5000甚至50,000年之后人类会是什么样子? Which of the following(statements)is Not mentioned in the passage?l According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?l According to the passage, all of the following are true except_____l It is stated in the passage…l From the passage we know that…l How would you describe the end of…l What’s the major problem…l How many…?l What…?l Why…?l 2.2做题方法解这类题时,审题是关键,首先一定得看清问题。比如一句结论性的话后边到底是…is true,还是is not true。 Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:When we talk about intelligence,we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school.By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence,we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.(76)For instance, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all he can.And then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out,but at least he tries. And,if he can’t make things work out right,he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed;he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life,a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.If you look at children, you’ll see great difference between what we call“bright”children and“not-bright”children.They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life—he tries to get in touch with everything around him.(77)But,the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world;he seems to have a wall between him and life in general. 1.According to this passage, intelligence is__.A.the ability to study well B.The ability to do well in school C.The ability to deal with life D.the ability to get high scores on some tests【解析】:C题干说:According to this passage, intelligence is__. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. The word“…”in line 5 refers to…..l The word“…”(Line 6.para.2)most probably means_____.l When the author says that,he is trying to….l By“…”,the author means_____.l The word“…”could best be replaced by which of the following?l which of the following is nearest in meaning to“…”?l In para.2,the sentence“……”probably means“……”l 3.2做题技巧解答这类试题时,考生应按照题中所指示的位置找到原句,仔细阅读原句,理解其含义。 Passage 3:Is teaching important?Well,of course it is.There was a time when the necessary knowledge could be taught to the young by family members. But as societies became more complex and division of labor more common,it was impossible for family members to teach the information and skills young people needed to become useful members of the society. As the need for specialists appeared, the job of teaching came into being in our county, and teaching as a job has been of increasing importance over the past hundred years.Today,we have strict rules for teachers. We hope all children can attend schools. Many things tell us that teaching is indeed an"important"job. In recent years, there has been an increasing need for teachers to be"responsible".This means that the public expects teachers to succeed in teaching important information to the young.Teachers’salaries today, while not much, certainly are much higher than they were in past year. These increases have come about because people have realized that without enough salaries, people who have abilities will not become teachers.Today almost no one says that"anybody will do"for a teacher. The public expects"quality people"to teach the young, and progress is being made to give salaries that will make people who have abilities become teachers.【译文】:教学重要吗? 14."Anybody will do"for a teacher means that_____.A.almost all people want to become a teacher B.a teacher is so highly respected that people all want to help him C.a teacher will do whatever he can for his students D.the job of teaching is so easy that everybody can do it【解析】:D题干说:"Anybody will do"for a teacher means that_____.“人人都会作”这句话对于教师意味着_____.A. These increases have come about because people have realized that without enough salaries, people who have abilities will not become teachers.Today almost no one says that"anybody will do"for a teacher. The public expects"quality people"to teach the young,即:教师工资的增加是因为人们已经认识到没有足够高的薪水,那些有能力的人就不愿意做教师。 It can be inferred from the passage that_____.l The passage implies that_____.l The passage suggests that_____.l What is implied in the passage?l The paragraph following(proceeding)this passage probably will discuss(discusses)_____.l The author implies that_____.l We can be inferred from the passage?l Which of the following statements is implied but NOT stated?4.2做题技巧推理性试题不能从文章中直接找到答案。 In ancient times, the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor’s degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same question, was probably not known until the nineteenth century.Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry.A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory.Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an"objective"test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer.Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like correct answers to students who have not learned the material properly.【译文】古代(ancient),最重要的考试(examination)是口试而不是笔试。 5.It may be concluded that testing_________.A.should test only opinions B.should always be written C.has changed since the middle Ages D.is given only in factories【解析】:C题干说:我们可以得出结论说测试_________.A. The author seems_____.l The author’s tone in this passage is_____.l The purpose of the author in writing this passage is_____.l The author’s intention in writing the passage is to_____.l The writer probably feels that_____.l In the author’s opinion,_____.l这类考题中:询问语气态度的题,选择项里常出现以下一些重要的词:sympathetic同情的,enthusiastic热情的,delighted愉快的,satisfied满意的,friendly友好的,agreeing赞同的,optimistic乐观的;objective客观的,matter-of-fact实事求是的,neutral中立的subjective主观的,indifferent冷淡的,critical批评的,doubtful怀疑的,disappointed失望的,sad悲伤的,hostile敌对的,disagreeing反对的,pessimistic悲观的。 Passage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:How can we get rid of garbage(垃圾)?Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the time it can save the land to hold garbage. For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped(倾倒)it on empty land. Now,empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use.The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum,or natural gas;but they are chemically similar to these fossil(化石)fuels. As we use up our fossil-fuel supplies,we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.(79)Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris,France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city’s garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil.(80)Our fossil fuel supplies are limited.Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount if garbage piling up on the earth.【译文】我们怎么才能处理垃圾呢? 14.What is the author’s attitude?A.DelightedB.SadC.AgreeingD.Disagreeing【解析】:A题干说:What is the author’s attitude? Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount if garbage piling up on the earth. What is the main idea of the passage?Which of the following would be the best title? What’s the best title for the passage? The main idea of the passage is that_____.This passage tells us_____.Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage? What does the passage mainly discuss? How often one hears children wishing they were grown up,and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents,he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do.It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child——things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-know.But a child has his pains:he is not so free to do what he wishes to do;he is continually being told not to do things,or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living,he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child,he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents,he may go to prison. If however,he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health,he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society. The main idea of the passage is that_____.A.life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains B.young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard C.childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life D.one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life文章的第一段讲的是人们常听说孩子们盼着长大成人,老年人则希望返老还童。 What is the main idea of the passage?Which of the following would be the best title? What’s the best title for the passage? The main idea of the passage is that_____.This passage tells us_____.Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage? What does the passage mainly discuss? How gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. The main idea of the passage is that_____.A.life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains B.young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard C.childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life D.one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life文章的第一段讲的是人们常听说孩子们盼着长大成人,老年人则希望返老还童。 Which of the following(statements)is Not mentioned in the passage?According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?According to the passage, all of the following are true except_____How many…?What…?Why…? 比如一句结论性的话后边到底是…is true,还是is not true. On November 19,1863,Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to speak at the National Soldiers Cemetery. The Civil War was still going on.There was much criticism of President Lincoln at the time.He was not at all popular. He had been invited to speak at Gettysburg only out of politeness. The principal speaker was to be Edward Everett,a famous statesman and speaker of the day.Everett was a handsome man and very popular everywhere. It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg.Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tired out,he again worked briefly on the speech. The next day Everett spoke first. He spoke for an hour and 57 minutes. His speech was a perfect example of the rich oratory of the day. Then Lincoln rose. The crowd of 15,000 people at first paid little attention to him.He spoke for only nine minutes. At the end there was little applause.Lincoln turned to a friend and remarked,“I have failed again.”On the train back to Washington,he said sadly,“That speech was a flat failure, and the people are disappointed.”Some newspapers at first criticized the speech. But little by little as people read the speech they began to understand better. They began to appreciate its simplicity and its deep meaning. It was a speech which only Abraham Lincoln could have made.Today, every American school child learns Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address by heart. Now everyone thinks of it as one of the greatest speeches ever given in American history. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A.Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address has deep meaning.B.Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is simple in style.C.Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is memorized by every American schoolchild.D.Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is the greatest speech ever delivered in the United States. It can be inferred from the passage that_____.The passage implies that_____.The passage suggests that_____.What is implied in the passage? The paragraph following(proceeding)this passage probably will discuss(discusses)_____. It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg.Late that night alone in his hotel room and tired out,he again worked briefly on the speech. It can be inferred from the text that_____.A.Lincoln prepared his speech very carefully before he went to Gettysburg B.Lincoln was very busy at the time and didn’t have much time to prepare his speech C.Lincoln’s speech was full of rich words D.Lincoln’s speech was very long文章的第二段有这样的话:“It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg.Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tired out,he again worked briefly on the speech.”“据说林肯是在去葛底斯堡的火车上准备他的演讲的。 The word“…”in line 5 refers to………The word“…”(Line 6.para.2)most probably means_____.By“…”,the author means_____.The word“…”could best be replaced by which of the following?which of the following is nearest in meaning to“…”?In para.2,the sentence“……”probably means“……” The market investigation is indispensable to sales promotion. They are closely related as the lips and teeth,so to speak. What you produce is for sale on the market. It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market. In the international market, goods on sale coming from different countries and suppliers are always facing keen competition.Under such circumstances, they will try everything possible to familiarize themselves with the market conditions. In making investigations,we ought to get information about what similar items the competitors are offering on the market, what prices they are quoting(报价),what features their products have, who are their regular customers, etc. Then, how can we obtain such information? There are many channels that we can make use of in doing this sort of work. The commercial counselor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad can help us in making market investigations.Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then. One of their purposes is to make market surveys on the spot.Certainly,face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen are also important channels to get market information. The Chinese Export Commodities Fairs and some other fairs of similar nature as well as visits of foreign businessmen provide us with such opportunities.Of course, there are some other ways of making market investigations. The word“indispensable”in the first line means_____.A.impossibleB.essentialC.advisableD.available“indispensable”在文章的第一段的第一行。 Sometimes we work on night shift——from 11:30 p.m to 7:30 a.m从破折号后的说明,我们可以断定“night shift”是“夜班”的意思。2、有些信号词如:is called, means, that is,is,or,define as,refer to等通常是针对某一词汇的定义、解释或说明。如:One sort of crimes which particularly worries people is juvenile delinquency, that is,crimes committed by young people. You may select any of these periodicals:Time Magazine,Newsweek,Reader’s Digest or The New Yorker. 常见的这些词或词组有while,whereas,unlike,but,yet,although,however,in contrast,on the other hand, rather than等。如:Jane was talking with others while Eliza remained reticent all the time. The door was so low that I hit my head on the lintel. 例如:supermarket(超市),foretell(预言),dissatisfied(不满意的)uncomfortably(不舒服地)等。 The C.books D.lectures TV Shows and Long Bus Trips Long bus rides are like televisions shows. They have a beginning,a middle, and an end-with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not.Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window.“Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.”“Drink Good‘n Wet Root Beer.”“Fill up with Pacific Gas.”Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off,are you spared the unending cry of“You Need It!Buy It Now!”The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you‘ve traveled that way before.Usually some things have changed-new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so.If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while,of course, the excitement dies down.Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride.Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you‘ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat.Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed.By now you‘ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests-even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.1.According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus
